Honest Improvisation: A New Class for Actors in the Grand Valley
I get excited when someone brings a new training opportunity to our valley, and this one is special.
Starting Monday, October 5, Dee Covington is teaching Honest Improvisation, a weekly theatre improv class at The Artery in downtown Grand Junction. It runs every Monday through October and November.
Who is Dee Covington?
Dee has spent the past 25 years as a teacher and professional performer in Denver. That's a lot of experience in rehearsal rooms, on stages and in front of students. It's rare to have an artist with her background teaching locally, and I really hope our actors take advantage of it.
What is "honest" improv?
Most of us picture improv as fast games and chasing the laugh. This class is different. Dee's approach centers on personal storytelling. You draw on your own life and experiences to:
Learn new skills you can take into auditions, rehearsals and performances
Practice brave expression so you can take risks and trust your impulses
Build community with other performers in the valley
The tagline says it well: Simple. Powerful. Human Connection.
Why actors should go
Improv trains listening, presence and truthful reactions, and those are exactly what casting directors notice. That goes for stage and for film. In an audition room or on set, you need to stay grounded and real when something unexpected happens. A class built on honesty instead of gags is a great way to build that.
It's also a fun and low-pressure way to meet other creative people here in town. Our community grows stronger every time artists show up in the same room together.

When: Every Monday in October and November, 6:00–8:00 pm
